We're settling into our new 'blog home' and we feel it's important for you to know a bit about our ethics as a small, locally-owned and operated business. At this cafe, we strive to be as environmentally conscious as possible. We're doing our part to minimize waste and consumption in the process of providing you with a comfy place and delectable goodies. There are many little things we do, such as recycle all paper goods, re-use containers when appropriate, purchase from the most ethical sources; meaning local and equally eco-friendly as ourselves, etc. There are 2 large strategies that we'd like to share with you that we practice in our efforts to be friends with our planet.
There are roughly 90 panels on the rooftop and on average they will supply this building with 25% of it's monthly energy usage. Check 'em out next time you're here or driving by.....they're visually interesting and kinda futuristic. We're proud and fortunate to have the ability to offer you tasty solar-made faire.
Meet Jon Meins. He's our resident compost collector. Here he is displaying his beautiful haul for the day...5 gallons of coffee grounds! Farmer Jon visits the cafe nearly every other day to retrieve the full buckets. We save all the cafe's organic materials in these handy containers and Jon brings them back to the earth. All organic materials mean coffee grounds and food scraps.
Jon uses the coffee and food scraps to create compost, which he then uses to amend the soil in the fields near his house. Jon grows vegetables for his family and friends. If you're driving down Sunset Road and you see a vegetable stand, it's probably Jon's. Stop by, say hi, and buy some veggies.
So, there it is. We compost a large portion of our waste and use solar energy. We're feeling good about these choices and we hope you do too!
